MIT Earth Resources Laboratory

Research

Research at ERL focuses on the development and integration of methodologies with the aim to advance a holistic understanding of sub-surface reservoirs. These methodologies include geophysical imaging, multiphase flow, remote sensing (GPS, InSAR), geomechanics, microseismics and stress estimation, borehole science, rock physics and chemistry, and data assimilation. The ultimate goal of our Integrated Reservoir Science is to improve the production of energy from sub-surface reservoirs or the safe sequestration of waste products (CO2, nuclear) in them, both in an environmentally responsible way. Our cross-cutting (theoretical, numerical, and experimental) research is conducted in different MIT departments and is applied in several Focus Areas, which include fractured reservoirs, reservoir monitoring, borehole science, geothermal energy, carbon sequestration, and near-surface environmental geophysics.
