Congratulations to Dr. Xinding Fang
May 2013
Xinding Fang successfully defended his thesis, “Geophysical Characterization of the Effects of Fractures and Stress on Subsurface Reservoirs” on May 17th, 2013. His committee consisted of Rob vand der Hilst, Michael Fehler and Alison Malcolm from the Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences Department at MIT and Dr. Arthur Cheng from Halliburton. Xinding will stay on at ERL as a Postdoc.

Georg Dresen – Visiting Professor
March 2013
Georg Dresen, of the Helmholz Centre, GFZ, German Research Centre for Geosciences, is visiting MIT from March to June. Prof. Dresen is an expert in rock and geo- mechanics. His research topics have included nucleation and propagation of brittle fractures, damage evolution and scaling relations in rock failure, monitoring and signal analysis of acoustic emissions during brittle failure, micro seismicity and acoustic emission activity in mines, deformation and seismic activity at the North Anatolian Fault, Turkey, in addition to topics involving rheology of rocks at high temperatures, pressures and strains. As part of his stay here, he will offer a workshop on the mechanical processes in rocks during failure and faulting, focusing on the relations among the local physical processes, fault motions, acoustic emissions, and seismicity.
Prof. Dresen will reside in ERL’s headquarters on the 2nd floor of the Green Building while at MIT.
Congratulations, Dr. Fuxian Song
March 2013
Fuxian Song successfully defended his Doctoral Thesis entitled "Microseismic mapping and source characterization for hydrofracture monitoring: a full-waveform approach." on March 7th, 2013. Fuxian already has a job lined up and will depart for Houston, TX shortly. All of us at ERL will miss him and wish him great success for the future.
